Understand Wiring Diagrams with LEDs
When it comes to electrical designs, wiring diagrams are essential for the safety and efficiency of all projects. For novice technicians, discerning the symbols on a wiring diagram can be tricky – especially those that represent LEDs. LEDs (or Light-Emitting Diodes) are common circuit components found in a variety of projects, so it’s important to understand their wiring diagrams.

A typical LED symbol looks like two arrows that converge to form a triangle. This is often called a “shoulcasing” and usually has an accompanying text label (which is either “LED” or just “L”). The proscenium indicates the polarity of the LED. The arrow pointing away from the triangle represents the positive terminal, while the arrow pointing inward indicates the negative terminal. Additionally, you may also find an additional symbol beside the LED itself. This indicates a resistor used to control the amount of electricity flowing through the LED (and controlling its brightness).

It’s important to remember that LEDs must always be connected with the correct orientation - otherwise, they won’t work. When implementing the design, take care to observe the orientation of the LED’s terminals and connect them as indicated on the wiring diagram. If necessary, use a continuity tester to make sure each LED is wired correctly.

If you’re having difficulty understanding how to interpret wiring diagrams, don’t worry; it’s normal to feel overwhelmed when starting out. To become more comfortable with reading diagrams, begin by studying a few sample projects and practice sketching out the symbols. With enough repetition, understanding LED symbols in wiring diagrams will become second nature.
