At the source, there are three phase conductors, typically labeled “Line A,” “Line B” and “Line C.” Depending on the size of the transformer, these conductors may also be referred to as “Phase 1,” “Phase 2” and “Phase 3.” In addition to the three-phase conductors, a neutral conductor also runs from the source to the output end of the transformer.

The star configuration is the most common, but it’s important to check the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure the correct wiring is used.
Finally, a ground conductor should always be run to the output of the transformer, regardless of the type of transformer being used. This provides a return path for residual current, helping to prevent shock and fires.
