Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping

By | January 13, 2020

Circuit breakers are one of the most important safety features in our homes. Without them, we'd be at risk of fires, electric shocks, and other hazards. But what happens when your circuit breaker keeps tripping? If it's an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB), then it could be a sign that something is wrong with your electrical system.

An ELCB is a special type of circuit breaker that is designed to protect against electric shock caused by ground faults. A ground fault exists when an unexpected current leaves the wiring of an electrical appliance or circuit and flows into the ground. Without the ELCB, this current can be fatal.

The ELCB trips when it detects a leakage in the system that is higher than its set sensitivity. This means it will trip even when there is no actual danger. It can be a nuisance if you're not sure why it keeps tripping, but it's actually doing you a great favor.

The most common causes of the ELCB tripping are faulty wiring, such as exposed cables or loose connections; appliances with worn or damaged wiring; or water entering the wiring system due to flooding. If you suspect any of these problems, it's important to get it checked out by an electrician as soon as possible.

The good news is that an ELCB is usually quite easy to reset. All you need to do is press the reset button on the breaker. If the ELCB trips again, then it's likely there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed, so it's best to get it seen to quickly.

Although having an ELCB that keeps tripping can be annoying, it's important to remember that it's there for a very good reason – to protect us from potential danger. So don't ignore it, and never try to bypass it. It may be a minor inconvenience, but it's much better than risking your safety.
