Circuit Diagram Switch Symbols

By | September 3, 2017

For anyone that has ever opened up a circuit diagram, they have likely seen the various symbols used to denote different switches, relays, and other electrical components. Although these symbols may initially seem like a confusing jumble of lines and shapes, understanding them can help you identify the different pieces of the circuit and get a better handle on how they work together.

To begin, let's take a look at the basic switch symbol. This has a simple rectangular shape with an extra line connected to it. This will typically indicate some form of switch or relay - think of it as the "on-off" button for a given circuit. Anything connected to this symbol will be either opened or closed based on the position of the switch.

Next, there's the push-button switch symbol. This looks similar to the basic switch symbol, but with two extra lines sticking out from the rectangle. This type of switch is very common and is used to momentarily open or close a circuit. Think of it as a manually triggered switch that can be used to activate a certain device.

Then there are two additional symbols related to electrical relays. The first is a single line connected to a rectangular box. This indicates a single-pole, double-throw switch. It's typically used to control large amounts of power and can be switched with a single input. The second is a double line connected to the same box. This denotes a double-pole, double throw switch, which is very similar to the single-pole switch but with two independent input signals.

Finally, there are several more advanced symbols that are designed to represent more complicated electrical components. These can include capacitors, resistors, diodes, transistors, and other specialized components. Understanding these symbols is essential in order to interpret how the circuit works and troubleshoot any problems.

All in all, these are just a few of the many switch symbols that you will come across in a circuit diagram. Knowing the meaning of each symbol will help you interpret the circuit more effectively, allowing you to make better informed troubleshooting decisions and create more effective designs.
