Calculate How Many Amps On A Circuit Board

By | November 25, 2021

Most homeowners and professionals need to know the amount of current running through a circuit board. Knowing how many amps are on a circuit board is an important safety check before any electrical work is done.

The most accurate way to measure how many amps on a circuit board is with a multimeter. A multimeter measures electrical current, voltage and resistance while also helping to detect any shorts or excessive resistance. Many newer multimeters have built-in test plugs to make connecting the leads safer and easier.

Before measuring amperage, always turn off the circuit breaker or unplug the circuit board so you don’t get a shock. Then, carefully clip the black lead of the multimeter to the negative end of the circuit wire. Next, clip the red lead to the positive side of the circuit and the multimeter will give out a digital reading that indicates the amperage reading for the circuit.

It’s important to remember that any circuit over 20 amps should have its own dedicated circuit breaker. If you don’t have one installed, it can be dangerous. For safety, make sure the circuit board’s amperage reading is below the rated amperage of the circuit breaker.

It’s also important to note that if multiple circuits are connected together, the total amperage running through them should not exceed the value of the smallest circuit breaker. For example, if you have four 10-amp circuits connected together, the total amperage should not exceed 10 amps.

Knowing how many amps are on a circuit board can help ensure electrical safety. For those who are unfamiliar with electricity or need a refresher, using a multimeter is an easy and reliable way to measure amperage. It only takes a few minutes and can go a long way towards keeping your space safe.
