The schematic symbol for a light emitting diode is made up of four basic elements: the anode (+), the cathode (-), the symbol for the diode itself (an arrow pointing from the anode to the cathode), and the symbol for light (a radiant energy line). The anode, or positive terminal, is connected to the longer lead of the diode. When current is applied, electrons move from the anode to the cathode, creating electron-hole pairs which emit photons of light. The cathode, or negative terminal, is the shorter lead of the diode and is connected to electrical ground.

They have a very long lifespan, are durable, compact, and available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
