When it comes to our nation’s power, much of it is generated by coal-fired power plants. In order to understand how these power plants work, it is important to first look at the schematic diagram of a coal-fired power plant.

At the heart of a coal-fired power plant is a massive steam turbine that spins a generator to produce electricity. The steam turbine is powered by heated water and coal. The coal is first fed into a furnace where it is heated to high temperatures by a stream of hot air. This causes the coal to ignite and release heat energy, which is used to turn water into pressurized steam. The steam is then sent through pipes to a turbine which spins a generator to produce electricity.

The hot exhaust gases are then sent through a system of cooling towers, which cool off the air before it is released into the atmosphere. This helps to limit the release of pollutants into the environment.

In order to ensure a steady supply of electricity, the coal is stored in silos or bunkers. When the power plant is running low on coal, additional coal is brought in from the surrounding mines. The coal is transported to the power plant via a conveyor belt or railroad tracks. From there, it is placed in the bunkers which feed the furnace.

The schematic diagram of a coal-fired power plant clearly illustrates the steps involved in producing electricity from coal. It also shows how pollutants are limited by cooling towers and how coal is transported to the power plant for use. Understanding this diagram can help us better understand the power production process and the importance of managing emissions.
