The NPN transistor has long been an essential component of electrical circuitry. It is a tiny switch that can be used to control current flow. A basic NPN switch circuit diagram consists of two components: the collector and the base. The collector is the ‘input’ side of the circuit and receives current from an outside source. The current then passes through the base, which is the ‘output’ side. When the base is energized, the current is allowed to pass through the transistor and into the output.

The key to understanding how the NPN transistor works as a switch is understanding the three regions of the device. The Base Region is responsible for controlling current flow through the transistor. The Collector Region is the area where the current is collected before being output. Finally, the Emitter Region is the area that releases the current when the transistor is switched off.

To use an NPN transistor as a switch, you must connect a voltage source to the base region. If the voltage is at the right level, the current will flow through the transistor, turning it on and allowing the current to pass through. To turn off the transistor, the voltage must be set to 0. This causes the transistor to block current from passing through the collector region.
