On the other hand, parallel circuits are made up of two or more branches running side-by-side, each with its own separate path. In these circuits, each branch will have its own resistance, but the total resistance for the circuit as a whole remains the same. This means that if one branch fails, the remaining branches will still work.

To work out a series circuit, you simply need to add together the resistances of each component. For a parallel circuit, you need to add up the reciprocal of each resistance, i.e. 1/R1, 1/R2, etc. Once you've done this, you then need to take the reciprocal of the total, which will give you the total resistance.

Working out series and parallel circuits can be confusing at first, but it's actually quite straightforward once you get the hang of it. With a bit of practice, you'll soon be able to calculate the resistance of any circuit with ease.
