At their simplest level, multimeters measure current, voltage, and resistance. When used properly, they can help identify problems with a circuit’s components and wiring. That way, you can quickly determine whether a circuit is functioning correctly or if it’s faulty.

To check a circuit with a multimeter, first make sure the multimeter is set to the appropriate level for the circuit you’re testing. For example, if you’re testing a 12-volt circuit, set the multimeter to measure up to at least 12 volts. Then, connect the probes of the multimeter to the ends of the circuit that you want to test.

Next, switch your multimeter to the correct function. If you’re testing for voltage, switch it to “Voltage,” and then take a reading. If the reading is too high or too low, you may have a problem. For example, a voltage reading that’s too low could indicate that a component isn’t working correctly.

To check for continuity, which indicates a closed circuit, switch the multimeter to “Continuity” and then touch the probes to each end of the circuit. If the multimeter beeps, the circuit is complete. However, if it doesn’t, there’s likely an open or broken circuit.

Finally, you can use the ohmmeter to check resistance in the circuit. Resistance occurs when two wires don’t have enough voltage to close the circuit. To do this, switch your multimeter to “Ohms” and then touch the probes of the multimeter to each end of the circuit. If the reading is above zero, there’s likely some resistance present.
