Quality digital multimeters and oscilloscopes are essential tools that can help you accurately measure voltage, current, resistance, as well as signals that pass through a particular circuit component. Depending on the complexity of the circuit being tested, you may also need a logic analyzer to test individual signals or a waveform generator to check a circuit’s response to varying input frequencies.

It’s also important to know the proper method for connecting test equipment to your circuit board. Generally, you should connect the multimeter directly across the component in question and then adjust the multimeter’s settings to record the desired readings. When checking a current or voltage source, it’s best to make two measurements - one with the ground lead connected to the circuit side of the component, and one with the ground lead connected to the opposite side. Oscilloscopes and logic analyzers must be connected to the circuit through a BNC or SMA connector.

Finally, when testing a circuit component, always keep safety in mind. Circuits contain potentially dangerous levels of electricity, so be sure to disconnect the power before probing any points on the circuit board. Also, it’s best to wear thick rubber soled shoes to protect yourself in case of accidental contact with the circuit board’s metal components.
