Having a multi-meter is essential when it comes to troubleshooting electrical problems. A multi-meter measures voltage, current and resistance in electrical circuits. Checking a circuit with a multi-meter is simple and straightforward, but having a basic understanding of how electricity works will help you get the most out of your device.

The first thing you should understand when checking a circuit with a multi-meter is that electricity likes to take the path of least resistance. This means that it will seek out the easiest route for the current to flow through, which could be a series of wires, bars or even components. It's important that you check for any shorts or breaks in the circuit before proceeding. To do this, set the multi-meter to the highest resistance setting and probe each connection point in the circuit to make sure that the meter readings are consistent.

Once you've confirmed that there are no shorts or breaks in the circuit, you can then begin testing the voltage, current and resistance in the circuit. For the voltage test, set the multi-meter to the DC Volts setting and with the circuit powered, probe one of the power source leads. This will give you the DC voltage output of the circuit. The current test is done in the same way except you'll need to set the meter to AC Amps and probe the circuit at each of the power source leads. Finally, for the resistance test, set the meter to Ohms and probe the circuit to measure the resistance between two points.

Having a functional multi-meter is absolutely crucial if you want to maintain your electrical appliances professionally. Checking a circuit with a multi-meter requires some basic knowledge of how electricity works, but the process is actually quite simple once you understand it. With a bit of practice, you'll soon be testing your circuits like an expert.
