How Do Simple Electric Circuits Work

In its simplest form, an electric circuit is a closed loop of metal conductor, usually copper or aluminum, with a continuous path through which electricity can flow. When electricity comes into contact with this metal conductor, it is distributed throughout the entire loop and allows electricity to effectively move from one point to another.

The components that make up a circuit are called electrical components. These components have two important jobs: controlling current flow and directing voltage. Resistors reduce the flow of current, capacitors store energy, and diodes allow electricity to travel in one direction only. All these components work together to direct current and voltage along the desired path.

Once the electricity has begun flowing through the circuit, a switch can be used to turn it on or off. Switches cause current to stop or start flowing by either making or breaking the connection between the two ends of the circuit.

However, these components and switches need a power source in order for the circuit to work. Common sources of power for circuits are batteries and outlets. Batteries provide power by converting chemical energy into electrical energy. Outlets provide power by connecting your home or office to the local electric grid.

Understanding the basics of electric circuits can be the foundation for tinkering, engineering, and robotics. Whether using electricity to power a lightbulb or control a robot, all of these applications rely on the same principles of how electric circuits work.
