An audio limiter is used to prevent sound levels from getting too loud. When an audio signal hits a certain level, it is attenuated, or reduced, so that the signal doesn’t exceed a certain threshold. This helps prevent distortion, as well as protecting the listener’s hearing. Audio limiters are usually used on tracks in the recording stages, but they can also be used to balance and protect various audio sources, such as PA systems and DJ setups.

A typical limiter circuit diagram consists of several components: an input signal source, a gain-reduction circuit, and an output stage. The input source passes its signal through the gain-reduction circuit, which is where the limiting magic happens. The gain-reduction circuit uses a variable resistor to adjust the output level so that it stays within a specified range. Finally, the output stage filters the input signal, attenuates it, and sends it back out to the listener.

The components of the audio limiter circuit diagram work together to produce the desired result. Along with the components, there are several parameters that need to be configured to ensure that the limiter works as expected. For example, the attack time determines how long it takes for the limiter to kick in once the maximum sound level is reached. The release time indicates how quickly the limiter stops attenuating the signal after reaching the desired level. Other parameters include the threshold (the highest peak levels to allow before attenuation starts) and the ratio (which measures the level of reduction applied).
